A domain name, simply explained is an easy to remember identifier for your web server. A domain name will tell the web browser to search the "Domain Name System (DNS)" which server to look for.
Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. For example, it will call out the IP (Internet Protocol) address for a web, mail or content server.
If you consider today's lifestyle, it is easier to find a phone number by looking for the person or company's name, first. However, if you try finding a company or person by their number, it might take you longer, as many people and companies may be sharing that same number, making it harder to yield the expected results.
Alongside domain names, there are "sub-domains" which may or may not reside on the same server.
Depending on your web hosting provider, you may have a limited or unlimited amount of sub-domain names to link to your main domain's hosting plan.
